As summer arrives, not only does the extreme heat make pets feel uncomfortable, but it also increases the risk of various diseases that come with the hot weather. Erawan Animal Hospital recommends that pet owners stay vigilant and prevent common illnesses that may arise during this time, as follows:
1. Heat Stroke
Heat stroke occurs when a pet's body is unable to cool down, causing their body temperature to rise to dangerous levels.
Symptoms:
๐ Heavy panting, sticky saliva
๐ Unsteady walking, weakness
๐ Fainting
Prevention:
๐ Avoid taking pets out in direct sunlight
๐ Ensure pets stay in shaded, cool areas
๐ Provide fresh and cool drinking water at all times
2. Skin Diseases from Moisture and Fungi
Summer brings humidity and sweat buildup on pets' skin, which can cause irritation and fungal infections.
Symptoms:
๐ Red rashes, itching, frequent scratching
๐ Hair loss, foul odor on the skin
Prevention:
๐ Bathe pets thoroughly and dry them well
๐ Use antifungal products as recommended by a veterinarian
3. Ehrlichiosis (Tick-borne Disease)
This disease is caused by ticks commonly found during hot weather. Ticks are carriers of the Ehrlichia parasite that can infect pets.
Symptoms:
๐ Loss of appetite, fever, pale gums
๐ Easy bleeding, such as bleeding from the gums
Prevention:
๐ Use tick and flea prevention products
๐ Regularly clean the pet's living area
4. Gastrointestinal Diseases
Hot weather can cause food to spoil quickly, leading to pets suffering from diarrhea, vomiting, or food poisoning.
Prevention:
๐ Store pet food properly
๐ Avoid feeding pets expired or spoiled food
Common summer diseases can be prevented by taking care of your pet’s health and maintaining a clean and safe environment. If any abnormal symptoms are noticed, it is important to take your pet to the veterinarian at the animal hospital immediately to ensure your pet stays safe and healthy all year round.
